This is a pivotal moment in the history of Huntington disease research.
The campaign against HD gained tremendous momentum in 1993, with the landmark discovery of the gene responsible for the disease, and there has been more progress in HD research in the last five years than in the entire period since the disease was first identified in 1872.
Scientific innovation and international collaboration have generated astonishing advances in our understanding of Huntington disease, and bold new strategies for fighting HD. There is growing optimism within the Huntington's community, in Canada and around the world, that it will be possible in the years ahead to defeat Huntington disease.
The Huntington Society of Canada has an impressive track record of strategic investment in research, and support for the HD cause now will produce remarkable results -- and not just for Huntington disease, because there will be important spin-off benefits for other serious disorders as well. For example:
Alzheimer disease
Parkinson disease and ALS
Cancer
Genetic testing
