We are
the Southern Alberta Chapter of the Huntington
Society of Canada.
With
the exception of our part-time Resource Centre Director, we are entirely
volunteer-run.
Our purpose is to help find an effective treatment and ultimately a cure for Huntington
disease.
While this promising research is ongoing, we work to support families
affected by Huntington
disease.

Bow
Cycle &
Sports generously supports HSC during 50th Anniversary.
Bow Cycle is celebrating their 50th
anniversary with very generous support of the Huntington Society of
Canada. They have produced a
limited number of “57” classic cruiser bicycles inspired by the
1917 Elgin. During May,
Huntington Disease Awareness Month, one of the “57’s” was
auctioned off on the BowBay website with 100% of the proceeds going directly
to the fight against Huntington disease.
With the classic lines and elegant features, this cruiser is the topper
to many a collection. The working "tank" holds two cool drinks and
a sandwich. www.bowbay.biz.
With the auction complete, you can drop
by Bow Cycle & Sports at 6501 Bowness Rd. N.W. in Calgary and purchase
one of twenty additional “57’s.” As a buyer, you will get the bike plus
a tax receipt for the difference over the cost of the bike. 100% of the purchase price goes
directly to the Huntington Society.

Huntington disease is a
hereditary brain disorder with devastating effects on both mind and body.
Onset typically occurs between 30 and 50 years of age. This is followed by a
physical and mental decline, which eventually leaves the person unable to
control their movements, thoughts and emotions. Death is inevitable within 10
to 20 years of onset.
One in every 10,000 Canadians has Huntington
disease and every child of a person with HD has a 50% risk of inheriting the
disease. This leaves many people caring for a sick parent, at risk themselves
and facing the guilt of potentially having already passed the gene on to
their children before they learn that HD is in their family.
Funds raised from this event will allow
HSC to continue investing in family services, education and research.
The HSC in Southern Alberta funds a social
worker who helps families cope with the emotional, financial and physical
burdens of the various stages of HD. She is active in the medical community
raising awareness of HD, which results in earlier and more accurate diagnoses
of this relatively rare disease. Workshops are also provided for care
professionals, nurses, nursing and medical students to introduce the unique
needs of Huntington
patients, which are unlike any other disease.
Although the gene was identified in 1993, there is still no cure or treatment
available for HD. HSC is currently funding research at the universities
of Calgary and Alberta in addition to other Canadian
institutions. The accelerating pace of research is offering more hope than
ever before that a solution will be discovered within the next generation.
And there is an expectation in the scientific community that solving the HD
puzzle will lead to research breakthroughs in Alzheimers, Parkinsons, ALS,
MS, and other neurodegenerative diseases.
